When you listen to them, do you feel like there’s a difference personalitywise? Um, how do I say? So I know for a fact that the voice actors will do their best to portray the character based on what they see in the script. Like they have their own interpretations of the character but also they receive some direction because whenever it comes to voice casting right there will be a director there telling them what direction to take what they envision for the scenes. But I do notice that different voice actors, they sort of amplify an aspect of the character much more than the other. His simplified Chinese has a more unbothered um almost kind of invincible feeling. He’s very unbothered and very kind of playful in a sense. His English VA emphasized his mischievousness, I guess, and he’s super super sassy. I think it’s also because of the the texture of his voice that kind of made him sound like, you know, like classic funny rich man kind of thing. But are they different? No. I at the very least I do like how in the end the VAS for Silus do manage to portray his character quite well. It’s just that their take on him kind of emphasizes a part of him differently, but they’re all just different aspects of Silus. You learned about art from your ex who owned an art shop. These are characters that you know are supposed to love you and would do nothing to hurt you because you know that for a fact which is very different from real life experiences. Like you can say this guy you thought you loved him but in the end he still did horrible things to you. You know, like that is a reality that can happen. But this is fiction and these characters are written to revere the character to love and cherish and be absolutely loyal. There’s no way they can deviate from that. And because of the safety of fantasy, whatever Zayn does, it is within the safetiness knowing that he would never do anything to harm you. So because of you looking at him in that kind of light, everything he does is kind of like lovable. You don’t really expect the worst from him. So the people who say like noncon, I feel like the separation from reality and fantasy, if you can do that, you can enjoy the story more basically. But I’m just saying like of course actions like that would not be acceptable in real life. But because of how you view them and because we know in this game for sure that they would never do anything to harm you. That’s why it’s how it’s how it’s how you see the character. So how you see Silus in the different voice uh in the different uh versions of the voice acting. It also depends how you see him. If you think he’s more sassy in English, then that’s how you’ll take it. And if you think he’s more nonchalant in Chinese, then that is exactly how you’ll see him. But at the same time, the writing makes his character out to be as this. And I can say at least in terms of how the voice actors portray him, they do a very good job and instead they put in their own flavor by emphasizing a different aspect of him. Yeah, basically that’s what I think. unbothered. He’s very unbothered. So much calmer. It’s not easy to get a reaction out of him. His laugh is quieter. It kind of feels more precious when you Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That’s why um he gives off the what the Chinese VA does very well for that their version of Silus. They bring out the fact that he’s an ancient mystical being. They emphasize that. And if you read if you listen to a lot of audio dramas like that kind of trope is very common and they do very well in making it seem like he’s so unbothered because he’s practically seen everything, right? And he’s also he’s also bored because nothing phases him. We say he is undefeated where it matters, right? Like when it comes to life and death situations, he almost feels like there’s nothing that can take him down. Which is why probably his reaction towards things are more lukewarm because, you know, he knows that he’ll be fine. I’d say I adore Silus Korean VA, too. He changed from hot villain voice to become Yeah. But here’s the thing. I’ve only listened to Korean Silus in the context that he’s taking care of her, which is why I saw that he controlled his energy around her. He knows that she’s sick, so he really brought down his tone. I don’t know if it’s like that in other cards, though. So, yeah, I need to listen to him in Korean and other cards. It’s just I don’t really have the time to reread a lot of the cards and change the language. I always just there there are cards that I go back to just for fun, you know, like comfort, but other than that, not really. You love both of them, Jay. I’m glad. They feel slightly different. Uh, yeah. Well, it’s just like how I feel about Raphael’s VA, honestly. His VA, English, Chinese, and Japanese. There’s a lot of differences between his English and then Chinese and Japanese. At least Chinese and Japanese there is some similarity. However, in Japanese, his elegance is heightened, emphasized. In simplified Chinese, his whimsical side is emphasized, you know, but there was the the simplified Chinese has much more maturity in his whimsicalness, if you get what I mean. That’s why there’s a slight difference between the Chinese and the Japanese. But then the English, I don’t know, maybe I’m just not very fond of the texture of his voice or just because to me, again, this is just my opinion. I know there are a lot of Raphael Giries who love his English VA. And that does not mean anything. I’m not saying that you’re wrong, okay? You you should always love what you love. I’m just saying. And for me personally, I find a lot of times when he talks, he always has the same tone. I don’t know, maybe I’m just really really sensitive when it comes to his English tone. Do you notice like he has a pattern over the way he talks? He’s like d like there’s a there’s a what’s the word? You know, the up and down of your voice. um what’s it called? Uh the rhythm the rhythm of the way he talks. It almost sounds the same every time he speaks and I don’t know why. But then that’s just me. It could just be me. It’s probably in my head. There’s just something wrong with my head. So yeah, each of them definitely different. Even for Caleb actually, his English and Japanese are so different. His English is super boy next door kind of thing. In his Japanese though, he really sounds like that on that that really looks after you, you know. He has that Onichan vibe in passionate appraisal. Korean Vay was Yeah, he was super gentle. But then that’s the thing. If I read other cards, I wonder how he’ll sound. Like, especially in tense situations, how would he sound? When do you practice your other languages? Oh, um, so my lifestyle, right, every time I’m with my friends, it’s a mix between English or Cantonese, sometimes Mandarin. Especially my friends, their kids, they’re making them try to learn Cantonese and Mandarin at the same time. So, because I’m around the kids, I also can practice my Mandarin. So, yeah. So, daily life, a mix of English and Cantonese with English dominating it mostly. Uh, then I have Korean lessons uh once a week, sometimes twice depending. So, I get to practice then. But also because I consume a lot of Korean media, I read a lot of web tunes and I try to read the web tune in Korean first before I read it in English and I that’s fun for me but mostly when I have the time that’s how I practice and also I go to Korea often and that’s how I practice. Japanese it’s just I don’t get to practice speaking. I learned it a long time ago. I even learned how to write and read, but I’ve forgotten most of it. And uh the knowledge I have is mostly just my weeb knowledge knowledge of the weeb. And um I can understand anime. Like I don’t need the subtitles all the time unless it’s like really really really deep deep conversations with crazy jarens or like uh terms depending on uh the world building like that I need subtitles for. Yeah, we we have opinions of VAS. Exactly. Inflection cadence. Yeah, I think I think cadence or inflection. I think both. Maybe I But at least you get what I mean, right? There like the up and down of the way he talks. I just I just think rhythm for Raph’s English VA. You either love it or dislike it. His tone and delivery is very colorful. Yeah. So, there is a lot of people who will like it, but there’s also a lot of people who will not really like it. I don’t hate it. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t hate it. I don’t hate any of their voice acting. It’s not like I’m going to be like, “Oh, I hate this. Why is it like this? No, no way. That’s just rude. I mean, it it’s very rude to his profession. Like, why am I saying he’s awful when I can’t even do a better job? Like, what’s the point? I don’t have enough time in my life to go hating on things. It’s just it’s not what I prefer. That’s all. The same can be said about Xavier’s VA. I love how his English VA brings out his softness while the Japanese VA makes him sound more boyish. Ah, yes. Yes, I agree on that. Honestly, Xavier’s VA, it took me, it didn’t take me as much time to get used to it because his type of voice acting is very very common in dubbed anime and I see them do this a lot. It’s really just the direction of how they do it, but especially Do you guys know Fruits Basket? There’s this uh character called Yuki. Is it Yuki? Was it Yuki? I forgot. The one that turns into a mouse, if you guys know what I mean. The If you know what anime I’m talking about. He has a very soft voice, but then his English dub made him sound so whispery. probably trying to match the original, which is another thing. I feel like a lot of times they try to match the original and I feel like that gets in the way sometimes. And since I’m used to hearing it like that when when uh I sometimes watch English dub, my sister likes watching English dub so she’ll be like, “Watch it like this. Watch it like this.” So then I’ll rewatch it. But I still prefer watching it in the original dub. But yeah, so I’m used to that kind of voice acting. So, it didn’t take me that much time to get used to Xavier’s voice acting because it’s familiar to me. For Caleb, many of his VA sound really good. You keep switching. It’s true though. Like, I’m actually like his English VA took me a while. At the beginning, I was like, I didn’t like the direction he was going, but as as it as it continued, there was like a major improvement. I feel like maybe the voice actor finally figured out what kind of character Caleb was in a sense because to be fair, Caleb’s character is hard to figure out. He’s very two-faced. And I don’t mean that in a bad way. It’s just the way his life is living. He has to be kind of two-faced. And maybe the VA was trying to figure out how to pit him down, you know? So, the most recent cards, he’s doing a bangup job. Like really crazy. But out of all the English VAs, I really think Zay’s VA is the number one that really surprised me is really really surprised me. Oh yeah, you guys you guys know which one. Yuki the rat. It was Yuki. I think it’s because you know how languages there are different tones or like you say cadence right when it comes to speaking like for Cantonese I can understand how some people will think Cantonese it sounds like we’re yelling it sounds like we’re angry sometimes even though we’re just having a regular conversation we do have very harsh tones so if you try to if you try to translate that into English and try to match the tone phone, it’ll sound very weird. And that’s the problem with um dub content. Instead of trying to make it entirely fitting for that language, sometimes they try to match the original too much. But I can see why because there’s a lot of comedic um you know how sometimes the humor is lost when the the language changes and that has to do with cultural context as well. So switching it to English can be really really hard. And it’s times like that where I feel like they’re going to need a lot of annotations like at the bottom. You know how like fan fan sub anime they don’t really change the words. Like for example on they don’t say big sister they just say on because it it fits better. And then at the end of the anime, they have a lot of annotations to explain a lot of the nuances culturally that cannot be translated in English. And I really love those. Those are so good. But it’s going to be hard to like have that done for like official media, you know, because of course you want the audience to get it immediately at the time that it’s being done. One of the biggest like the biggest fights I’ve ever had with my sisters is because of food. I can’t for the life of me play it though because whenever So I tried playing Dead Space and because the the the ambient sounds around, they did such a good job with it. It was so hard for me to turn a corner. It was so hard. Like you you know how you’re going down a hallway and then the path just forks left and right? I get so scared because I don’t know what the going to jump out. Literally, I’m at the edge of the corner and then I’m like inching closer and then going like I believe I stood in that hallway for 15 minutes and then my sisters were laughing the laughing so hard and it took us 3 hours to get through the first I would say 15 20 minutes of the game. 3 hours. I am not joking. I am not joking. If you make me play an action horror game like like Dead Space, if one chapter only lasts for an hour, my recording would be 6 hours. I’m not kidding you.
